Whycliffe & The Missionaries

Whycliffe & The Missionaries

Donovan Whycliffe Bromwell a regular face on the streets of Nottingham the guy who sang for a quid in the city centre living in sheltered housing. Born into a family of Twelve, back in the nineties, however, he was an upcoming soul singer signing a record deal to MCA, selling out the Hammersmith Odeon, supporting the Godfather of Soul James Brown and dating Aussie babe Dannii Minogue. He was tipped to become the next Prince. Not many, however get as close to the big time as Whycliffe did, only to see it all crumble in front of him. Success never materialised. Frustration & disappointment exacerbated mental health issues. Wycliffe was dropped by MCA losing all of his belongings, including his home. His close relationship broke-down with his partner and family, who tried hard to keep him going. Drug and alcohol addiction led to homelessness Whycliffe found himself begging on the streets of Nottingham. For decades he was lost & forgotten.

Until last year. His music was reignited by a new online audience. A local record label became interested found him and began helping him, encouraging him to once more believe in himself. New songs have been written and recorded, live performances are happening and with his voice growing stronger he hopes to once again perform to an audience who never forgot what he meant to them all those years ago.

This show is not one to be missed.

Des Demonas, Dead Mint

  • 1 Fisher Gate Nottingham, England, NG1 1GD United Kingdom (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Familiar Washington DC stalwarts blend many cool sounds to create timeless and incredible music. Support from Nottingham's' own Dead Mint.

Washington, DC’s DES DEMONAS have been hailed as a favourite of Henry Rollins (KCRW FM/Black Flag), Marc Riley (BBC6 Music/The Fall), and Iggy Pop (BBC6 Music/The Stooges) since the release of their debut LP on In The Red. The group is made up of some familiar names from the DC punk, garage, and indie scenes. A Kenyan punk-poet-politique Jacky “Cougar” Abok (Foul Swoops, Thee Lolitas) vocals & percussion, Mark Cisneros (Hammered Hulls, Kid Congo and the Pink Monkey Birds, The Make-Up) on guitar, Paul Vivari (Benjy Ferree, DJ Soul Call Paul) on Farfisa organ & bass machine, and Matt Gatwood (Two Inch Astronaut) on drums.

Des Demonas’ music is a melding of disparate sounds and influences, hitting with a driving pulse and fiery intent. “The sonic fuel of the band is a blend of post punk, punk, funk, blues, psych rock, Afro beat, even bubble gum but the noise you hear is pure Des Demonas.” -Kim Salmon / The Scientists “Dig the Des Demonas. Play it loud. Twist your wig.” -Kid Congo Powers

Abstract concrete and Mess Eaque

Abstract concrete and Mess Eaque

'Abstract Concrete is another big step for UK underground heavyweight Charles Hayward (This Heat, Camberwell Now), joined by some of the most exciting and forward-thinking young London players from a diversity of European underground and experimental scenes: Agathe Max, Roberto Sassi, Yoni Silver & Otto Willberg.'

Charles Hayward's music is unique, innovative and ultra charismatic. A titan of English underground music, big influence to many and part of what makes our musical landscape so culturally rich. Honestly can't think of anything comparable.

Abstract Concrete follows a continuum of such melodic art school innovators as The Kinks, Brian Eno, Robert Wyatt and Penguin Cafe Orchestra, as well as Hayward’s own experimental post punk past, all the while nodding to a childhood spent listening to folk and pop'.

MESS ESQUE (Australia) via Drag City

Mick Turner of Dirty Three and the mighty Tren Brothers (not to mention myriad side projects and solo work). No one plays like Mick. He makes it seem so simple, like one guitar could be the perfect accompaniment for anything at all. So much texture allowing simple and bold ideas to surface and blow your mind. Not much music can move you like this - beautiful, restful and such an air of expansiveness it can be breathtaking. Mess Esque starts here but in a more traditional infrastructure. Languid & dreamy poppy soundscapes to leave your mind to.
